QUESTION NO. 4 Define/describe/discuss the following terms: communication revolution, airplay vs netpaly, umbrella perspective of communication technology.

Communication Revolution
Refers to the series of technological innovations that revolutionized the way people interact.  These technological innovations are evident with the emergence of high-tech applications such as laptops, mobile phones, digital television and of course, the power of the internet which gave access to social networks and e-commerce.  The series of technological advancement in information communication technology is said to be revolutionary because it transformed both personal and mass communication.  The presence of E-mail, SMS, online chat, Skype, social networking site and other online applications made communication instantaneous all over the world; which help us connect and catch up with friends and family members who are away from us.  Communication Technology allows us to learn new thing and break physical distance, making life better and easier.
Airplay VS Netplay
Airplay refers to terrestrial radios or conventional radios.  This is often used in differentiating regular radio and internet or satellite.  It basically refers to radio broadcasted from towers on the surface of the planet.
Net-play or internet radios (such as widgets, links, mobile application and playlists), it is an audio service transmitted via the internet. It involves streaming media which provides listeners with continuous stream of audio that cannot be paused or replayed.
Umbrella Perspective of Communication Technology

"Communication Technology is the hardware equipment, organizational structures, and social values by which individuals collect, process, and exchange information with other individuals."

Hardware is the most obvious aspect of communication technology which refers to the physical equipment and the most tangible part.   It is also important to understand the messages communicated through the technology system.  These messages are called software.

To understand hardware and software into a much larger concept, it must incorporate contextual factors (based from the definition’ hardware equipment, organizational structures, and social values by which individuals collect, process, and exchange information with other individuals’) and analyzing dependency relations within and across levels of analysis, including the individual, organizational system and system levels.
These two approaches were combined in the Umbrella Perspective of Communication.

-The bottom level is composed of the hardware and software of the technology.
-The next level is the organizational infrastructure which is responsible in the production and distribution of technology.
-The top level includes the social system (economic, political and media systems)
-The handle signifies the individual user.

Basically, the umbrella perspective states that all of the components must be understood to be able to understand communication technology.

There are actually significant factors within each level.
1.      Enabling- those that make an application possible.
2.      Limiting- direct opposite of enabling factors.
3.      Motivating-those that provide a reason for adoption of a technology.
4.      Inhibiting- provides a disincentive for adoption or use of communication technology.
